Research and development : Our source of energy

KOHLER-SDMO’s research and development unit is made up of three separate areas that operate interdependently: the design offices, the prototypes department and the product engineering department.

Research and development for electricity power plants

A well-oiled machine

At the request of the Marketing department, the design offices develop products inspired by market trends. The job of testing is passed on to the prototypes department, which produces the generating set and performs all the necessary tests on it, at its laboratory. Following the tests, a deliverable is sent to the department that initiated the request. If the findings of the deliverable fulfil its expectations, the product engineering department takes the baton and prepares the genset to enter production. It makes the relevant decisions to ensure that the conditions of production reflect the initial prototype, with the best quality/cost ratio.

At the heart of research: the laboratory

The laboratory has been ISO17025 accredited since 2009 for testing activities according to the accreditation scope 1-2171 available on the website www.cofrac.fr (https://tools.cofrac.fr/annexes/sect1/1-2171. pdf)
Our la is able to perform 5 main categories of tests:

  • Heat balance (cooling)
  • Sound level measurements (measuring method in compliance with Directive 2000/14/EC and ISO8528-10)
  • Electrical checks (EN12601-ISO8528)
  • Project-specific controls (controller boards, impact of load/shedding (standard ISO8528-5 (performance classes G1/G2/G3))
  • Production controls (in compliance with Directive 2000/14/EC, trade products…)

KOHLER-SDMO laboratory is ISO17025 certified
KOHLER-SDMO laboratory benefits from tailored facilities

Infrastructures of exception

To perform its tasks, the laboratory benefits from tailored facilities.

Extending over more than 2000 m², it has high-performance equipment at its disposal:

  • a prototype construction area with a 20-tonne lift,
  • 3 test benches with control rooms,
  • a sound level area (Bruële&kjaër station) 1000m² in size,
  • etc.
During the entire testing process, it applies its principle of independence from its customers, which are principally the design offices, but also the marketing, production and after-sales departments.
